Games to Build Focus with Your Dog
Does your dog seem to forget you exist the moment you step outside? You’re not alone! Building your dog’s focus takes practice, and one of the best ways to do that is through games that make paying attention fun and rewarding.
At Sit Happens Dog Training, we use games to teach dogs that checking in with you is the best part of their day, even with squirrels, smells, and distractions competing for their attention.
Why Play-Based Focus Training Works
Games help your dog learn to:
Check in with you automatically
Stay engaged around distractions
Build confidence while having fun
When training feels like a game, your dog wants to participate, making your walks, recalls, and daily routines smoother and more enjoyable.
3 Simple Games to Try
🏃♂️ 1. “Catch Me” Game
Take a few quick steps backward while calling your dog in a cheerful voice. When they move toward you, mark (“yes!”) and reward. This game encourages your dog to turn attention back to you and builds enthusiasm for coming when called.
🎈 2. “Treat Magnet”
Hold a treat to your dog’s nose and slowly guide them in different directions, rewarding them for staying close and following your movement. This game helps your dog learn to stay engaged with you, builds leash walking focus, and is calming for excitable dogs.
🐕 3. “1-2-3 Treat Game”
As you walk, count out loud, “One, two, three,” and on “three,” drop a treat by your foot. Your dog will start to anticipate checking in with you during walks, building engagement and loose leash focus without pulling.
Tips for Success
Keep sessions short and fun (2-5 minutes).
Use treats your dog loves to keep motivation high.
Start in quiet environments before adding distractions.
Celebrate small wins to keep training enjoyable for both of you.
Make Focus a Habit
These games are more than just entertainment; they build the reliable habits your dog needs for better walks, stronger recalls, and calm, confident behavior in the real world.
If your dog struggles to focus or you want a personalized training plan to build these skills, we’re here to help.
